Pediatric Acupuncture

Pediatric Acupuncture San PedroPediatric Acupuncture treatments use natural methods to stimulate the body’s own healing power, restore balance, and support the child’s natural resilience.

Each treatment is customized to the individual child’s temperament and specific needs. All aspects of a child’s health are taken into consideration; physical, nutritional, and mental/emotional well-being. After a thorough discussion of the child’s health history and current complaint, one or more of the following treatments may be used: pediatric acupuncture, herbal medicine, far infrared heat therapy, shonishin, tuina massage, and dietary modifications.

WHAT IS SHONISHIN

Shonishin literally translates as sho “little”, ni “children”, and shin “needle”. It is a type of Japanese Pediatric Acupuncture treatment in which no needles are involved. Instead, small metal instruments are used to apply pressure and rubbing to certain areas of the body; usually the arms, legs, and upper back. It is a painless procedure and many children often find it soothing and calming.

What Can Pediatric Acupuncture Treat?

Pediatric Acupuncture treats an array of conditions including (but not limited to); digestive troubles, constipation, diarrhea, acid reflux, ear infections, stress, headaches, growing pains, eczema, colic, sleeping troubles, teething pain, asthma, allergies, and cold & flu symptoms.

What If My Child is Afraid of Needles?

Not to worry! Needles are usually only used on older children (usually 9 or 10 years old). We work up to that process and only use needles once a child is completely ready to do so. There are many modalities that we use in Pediatric Acupuncture treatments that do not involve needles; tuina massage (a type of traditional Chinese medical massage), shonishin (a Japanese style acupuncture without the needles), heat therapy, herbal medicine, and dietary recommendations.

Does It Hurt

No! Pediatric Acupuncture treatments are painless. They are intended to help your child relax and feel comfortable while promoting the body to heal itself.

How Will My Child Ever Sit Still For a Treatment?

When working with kids I never expect them to sit still for too long, after all they are kids and it is not in their nature to sit still! Pediatric acupuncture treatments tend to be shorter than adult treatments for this very reason. I often treat children while they are playing with their toys or other siblings in the room. When treating kids an Acupuncturist must be flexible and treat according to the dynamics of the child.

Is Acupuncture Safe For Kids?

Acupuncture is extremely safe for children. There are very few side effects of acupuncture. Some of the more common side effects are good effects; better sleep, better digestion, being relaxed after a treatment. Occasionally there can be less desirable side effects such as bruising, numbness, or tingling (in less than 5% of cases); which tend to go away relatively quickly. In the hands of a well trained and licensed Acupuncturist side effects are a very rare occurrence.
